The Los Angeles Senate President Dewann Clark presented Ms. Amber Patton with a National Certificate of Recognition, and two scholarship award checks totalling $2,250 at last Saturday's general senate meeting, for her achievements in scholastic excellence. Due to her absense, the National award was accepted on her behalf at convention, and subsequently included with the local senate award presentation on Saturday.
The teenager was selected as the second place National 2011 Owen Washington Scholarship Award Recipient, for the amount of $1,250 and the first place LA Senate 2011 Finalist Scholarship Award Recipient, for the amount of $1,000 in competition with other local and national award applicants. Amber is the niece of long time LA Senate member & tournament official Donald Fisher, who is her legal guardian.
The 3.8 GPA Lakewood High School graduate is set to begin her first semester at California State University, Fullerton this fall as a nursing major. She intends to minor in biology, and plans to become a Registered Nurse after graduating.
"Early in life, I knew I wanted to be in the medical field. I am a caring person and love to help people," indicates the driven student of her ambitions to attend college this year. She decided to become a nurse after caring for an aunt, who fell ill and was hospitalized. Making trips to the hospital, seeing how the caregivers interacted with her aunt, and actually having the chance to help herself was the basis for the inspiration.
The star pupil achieved a number of accomplishments as a high school student that included the completion of Advanced Placement (AP) math, science, language, and history classes. She also immersed herself in extra curricular activities like The Young Black Scholars, the ROP Medical Academy, American Red Cross Club, and the California Scholarship Federation. While a senior, she mentored incoming freshman students through her involvement and leadership in the Link Crew Program.
The LA Senate will be following up periodically on Amber's progress, and will be rooting for her success in education. "We expect to see invitation to a graduation in the mail in 4 years, and look forward to an update after her mission is completed" indicates the sitting board.
Congratulations go out to Amber for her award, and the best of luck to her on her future accomplishments from TNBA. A congratulations to her uncle Donald is also in order, for raising a great example for our community.
